ELD Mandate Basics
The electronic logging device (ELD) rule is intended to help create a safe working environment for drivers to make it easier and faster to accurately track, manage, and share records of duty status. The ELD Mandate affects three areas: driver duties and protections, fleet responsibilities, and technical requirements for ELD suppliers.
Companies and Owner-Operators that had Electronic Onboard Recorders (EBORDs) implemented before the ELD Mandate was issued will have an additional two years to comply with the new rule. EBORDs must be compliant with FMCSA §395.15 to be included in the Grandfather Clause. The Grandfather Clause extends the compliance deadline to four full years.
